As a self-proclaimed scarf lover, I’m a huge fan of finding different scarf styles in order to switch up my look. We all know the traditional ways to wear one, but what about those out of the box styling tips? Or, perhaps you have NO idea how to style a scarf and you need to start with the building blocks and work your way up to some scarf pizzazz. Either way, I got you, because this month’s Style Tips is all about different scarf styles. I’ll be using my classic Burberry scarf for all of these looks so that you can truly see the versatility of this wardrobe essential.
Scarf Styles: The Basics
I thought I’d start off with a classic- not everyone is a scarf connoisseur, you know! The easiest, and one of my favorite, ways to style a scarf is to just let her hang loose! Make sure your scarf is even and hang it around your neck. This look works really well on top of a long coat or vest or just over a sweater like I did. This also works great for men.
This style is the best when it’s not as cold as expected out, but you still wanted to scarf-accessorize. It doesn’t really keep you warm while it’s hanging, but it is still incredibly stylish. An alternative to the basic ‘hang’ is to wear is as a sort of shawl around the back and arms! I like to do this with a sweater dress in the early seasons of autumn when it’s not too cold out and I can get away with no coat. It’s such a cozy feeling – like a hug in a scarf.
Belt It!
Waist belts are ALL the rage right now. I personally find this look always stylish, but it just so happens to be extremely trendy right now! You want to start off by hanging it around your neck, add a waist belt, and voilà ! You are stylish and giving those Instagram influencers a run for their money. Not only that, but it marks your waist and helps gives you that hourglass figure. It truly is THAT simple.
The choice of belt is up to you, but I recommend sticking to neutrals especially if your scarf is loud. I tend to go for skinnier belts, but I do plan on investing in a larger Valentino belt later this year. You could also go for those HUGE waist belts, but do be careful! If you are shorter/have a shorter torso, this could actually cut your frame and not be as flattering.
A way to give this styling idea a little extra spice is to wear the scarf over one shoulder instead of your neck as pictured below. It’s definitely a look, so be ready to rock it with confidence. I love how unexpected this is while still maintaining a well put together vibe.
A Simple Tie
A simple tie – my go-to for scarf styles when it’s ACTUALLY cold out and I’m not just rocking one for fashion purposes. I’m not a fan of tight knots on my scarves; it just gives me mild anxiety and I don’t want to potentially damage or stretch it out. So, for this look, I go with a pretty thick and loose knot close to my neck. I usually pair it with my black Burberry peacoat and the scarf just peeks through the coat which I LOVE for those chilly days.
Do make sure to play around with the scarf in order to give you the most neck coverage possible. I usually pull mine out towards the top and make it really fluffy. I don’t mess around when it comes to the cold!
Around The Neck
There are sooo many ways to go about this one! You can just wrap it around your neck once and let the ends hang out in the front as I did here. It gives you some coverage, but it’s a fashion statement as well. You could also double wrap it around your neck for more warmth and barely have any ends sticking out and copy an infinity scarf.
Finally, you can wrap it around your neck and have one end in the front and the other in the back. This is SUPER chic and you’re serving a little look from the back, too. For all these scarf styles, make to mess around with how loose it is around your neck. Simply adjusting the loop can give a different vibe to your outfit.
Scarf Styles Tips
Here is a little list of tips for you when you’re rocking your scarves out on the town!
- NEVER have your tag hanging out! Burberry stitches their tags on the scarf, which is fine, but make sure the tag is against you and not the world! If it can be cut, I’d recommend doing that. It truly cheapens a look and makes it a bit tacky.
- Cashmere scarves – getting them wet is fine. It’s what you do AFTER they’re wet that matters as they can easily loose their shape and get ruined. Make sure to do your homework and research how to care for it! If you’re going to invest in one, it’s the least you can do.
- Avoid scarves that are too thin. These look very dated! On that note, go for a reasonable length, too. You should be able to wrap it around your neck comfortably at-least once.
- Quality doesn’t have to be luxury. 🙂
- Have fun! Scarves should be a playful accessory. Get a bold color (make sure it’s the right color for you as it will be next to your face!) or a cute pattern. They can truly take your outfit to that next level.
